F Psalm 44, Chant E

Chant H

Psalm 44   Deus, auribus

1 We have heard with our ears, O God, our forebears have told us, *
the deeds you did in their days, in the days of old.

2 How with your hand you drove the peoples out and planted our forebears in the land; *
how you destroyed nations and made your peo-ple flou-rish.

3 For they did not take the land by their sword, nor did their arm win the victory for them; *
but your right hand, your arm,

8 Every day we gloried in God, *
and we will praise your Name for ev-er.

Chant H

9 Nevertheless, you have rejected and hum-bled us *
and do not go forth with our ar-mies.

10 You have made us fall back before our ad-ver-sar-y, *
and our enemies have plun-dered us.

11 You have made us like sheep to be eat-en *
and have scattered us among the na-tions.

12 You are selling your people for a tri-fle *
and are making no profit on the sale of them.

Chant H

13 You have made us the scorn of our neigh-bors, *
a mockery and derision to those a-round us.

14 You have made us a byword among the na-tions, *
a laughingstock among the peo-ples.

15 My humiliation is daily be-fore me, *
and shame has covered my face;

16 Because of the taunts of the mockers and blas-phemers, *
because of the enemy and a-ven-ger.

Chant H

17 All this has come up-on us; *
yet we have not forgotten you, nor have we betrayed your cov-enant.

18 Our heart never turned back, *
nor did our footsteps stray from your path;

19 Though you thrust us down into a place of mis-ery, *
and covered us over with deep dark-ness.

20 If we have forgotten the Name of our God, *
or stretched out our hands to some strange god,

Chant H

21 Will not God find it out? *
for she knows the secrets of the heart.

22 Indeed, for your sake we are killed all the day long; *
we are accounted as sheep for the slaugh-ter.

23 Awake, O Lord! why are you sleep-ing? *
Arise! do not reject us for ev-er.

24 Why have you hidden your face *
and forgotten our affliction and op-pres-sion?

Chant H

25 We sink down into the dust; *
our body cleaves to the ground.

26 Rise up, and help us, *
and save us, for the sake of your stead-fast love.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Ho-ly Spir-it: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. A-men.
