Psalm 78:1-39\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Attendite, popule<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

1 Hear my teaching, O my<\/span> peo-ple; *<\/span>
\n incline your ears to the words of my<\/span> mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n

2 I will open my mouth in\u00a0a<\/span> par-able; *<\/span>
\nI will declare the mysteries of an-cient<\/span> times<\/span><\/p>\n

3 That which we have heard and known,<\/span>\u00a0and what our forebears\u00a0have<\/span> told us, *<\/span>
\n we will not hide from their<\/span> chil-dren.<\/span><\/p>\n

4 We will recount to generations to come<\/span>\u00a0the praiseworthy deeds and the power of the<\/span> LORD, *<\/span>
\n and the wonderful works she has<\/span> done.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Chant<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

5 She gave her decrees to Jacob<\/span>\u00a0and established a law for<\/span> Is-rael, *<\/span>
\n which she commanded them to teach their<\/span> chil-dren;<\/span><\/p>\n

6 That the generations to come might know,<\/span>\u00a0and the children yet un<\/span>-born; *<\/span>
\n that they in their turn might tell it to their<\/span> child-ren;<\/span><\/p>\n

7 So that they might put their trust in<\/span> God, *<\/span>
\n and not forget the deeds of God,<\/span>\u00a0but keep her\u00a0com<\/span>-mand-ments;<\/span><\/p>\n

8 And not be like their forebears,<\/span>\u00a0a stubborn and rebellious ge-ne<\/span>-ra-tion, *<\/span>
\n a generation whose heart was not steadfast,<\/span>\u00a0and whose spirit was not faithful to<\/span> God.<\/span><\/p>\n

9 The people of Ephraim, armed with the<\/span> bow, *<\/span>
\n turned back in the day of<\/span> bat-tle;<\/span><\/p>\n

10 They did not keep the covenant of<\/span> God, *<\/span>
\n and refused to walk in her<\/span>\u00a0law;<\/span><\/p>\n

11 They forgot what she had<\/span> done, *<\/span>
\n and the wonders she had<\/span> shown them.<\/span><\/p>\n

12 She worked marvels in the sight of their<\/span> fore-bears, *<\/span>
\n in the land of Egypt, in the field of<\/span> Zo-an.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Chant<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

13 She split open the sea and let them pass<\/span> through; *<\/span>
\nshe made the waters stand up like<\/span> walls.<\/span><\/p>\n

14 She led them with a cloud by<\/span> day, *<\/span>
\n and all the night through with a glow of<\/span> fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

15 She split the hard rocks in the<\/span> wil-derness *<\/span>
\n and gave them drink as from the great<\/u><\/span> deep.<\/span><\/p>\n

16 She brought streams out of the<\/span> cliff, *<\/span>
\n and the waters gushed out like<\/span> ri-vers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Chant<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

17 But they went on sinning a<\/span>-gainst her, *<\/span>
\n rebelling in the desert against the<\/span> Most<\/span><\/span> High.<\/span><\/p>\n

18 They tested God in their<\/span> hearts, *<\/span>
\n demanding food for their<\/span> crav-ing.<\/span><\/p>\n

19 They railed against God and<\/span> said, *<\/span>
\n “Can God set a table in the<\/span> wil-derness?<\/span><\/p>\n

20 True, she struck the rock,<\/span>\u00a0the waters gushed out, and the gullies over<\/span>-flowed; *<\/span>
\n but is she able to give bread<\/span>\u00a0or to provide meat for her<\/span>\u00a0peo-ple?”<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Chant<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

21 When the LORD heard this,<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0she was full of<\/span> wrath; *<\/span>
\n a fire was kindled against Jacob,<\/span>\u00a0and her anger mounted against<\/span> Is-rael;<\/span><\/p>\n

22 For they had no faith in<\/span> God, *<\/span>
\n nor did they put their trust in her sav-ing<\/span> power.<\/span><\/p>\n

23 So she commanded the clouds a<\/span>-bove *<\/span>
\n and opened the doors of<\/span> hea-ven.<\/span><\/p>\n

24 She rained down manna upon them to<\/span> eat *<\/span>
\n and gave them grain from<\/span> hea-ven.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Chant<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

25 So mortals ate the bread of<\/span> an-gels; *<\/span>
\n she provided for them food<\/span> e<\/span>-nough.<\/span><\/p>\n

26 She caused the east wind to blow in the<\/span> hea-vens *<\/span>
\n and led out the south wind by her<\/span>\u00a0might.<\/span><\/p>\n

27 She rained down flesh upon them like<\/span> dust *<\/span>
\n and winged birds like the sand of the<\/span> sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

28 She let it fall in the midst of their<\/span> camp *<\/span>
\n and round about their<\/span> dwel-lings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Chant<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

29 So they ate and were well<\/span> filled, *<\/span>
\n for she gave them what they<\/span> craved.<\/span><\/p>\n

30 But they did not stop their<\/span> crav-ing, *<\/span>
\n though the food was still in their<\/span> mouths.<\/span><\/p>\n

31 So God’s anger mounted a<\/span>-gainst them; *<\/span>
\nshe slew their strongest men<\/span>\u00a0and laid low the youth of<\/span> Is-rael.<\/span><\/p>\n

32 In spite of all this, they went on<\/span> sin-ning *<\/span>
\n and had no faith in her wonderful<\/span> works.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Chant<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

33 So she brought their days to an end like a<\/span> breath *<\/span>
\n and their years in sudden<\/span> ter-ror.<\/span><\/p>\n

34 Whenever she slew them, they would<\/span> seek her, *<\/span>
\n and repent, and diligently search for<\/span> God.<\/span><\/p>\n

35 They would remember that God was their<\/span> rock, *<\/span>
\n and the Most High God their re<\/span>-deem-er.<\/span><\/p>\n

36 But they flattered her with their<\/span> mouths *<\/span>
\n and lied to her with their<\/span> tongues.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Chant<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

37 Their heart was not steadfast toward<\/span> her, *<\/span>
\n and they were not faithful to her<\/span>\u00a0cov-enant.<\/span><\/p>\n

38 But she was so merciful that she forgave their sins<\/span>\u00a0and did not des<\/span>-troy them; *<\/span>
\n many times she held back her anger<\/span>\u00a0and did not permit her wrath to be<\/span> roused.<\/span><\/p>\n

39 For she remembered that they were but<\/span> flesh, *<\/span>
\n a breath that goes forth and does not re<\/span>-turn.<\/span><\/p>\n

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spir<\/span>-it: *<\/span>
\nas it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. A<\/span>-men.<\/span><\/p>\n
