Psalm 55\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Exaudi, Deus<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

1 Hear my prayer, O God<\/span>; *<\/span>
\n do not hide yourself from my pe<\/span>-ti-tion.<\/span><\/p>\n

2 Listen to me and an<\/span>–swer me<\/span>; *<\/span>
\n I have no peace, because of my<\/span> cares.<\/span><\/p>\n

3 I am shaken by the noise of the en<\/span>-emy *<\/span>
\n and by the pressure of the<\/span> wic-ked;<\/span><\/p>\n

4 For they have cast an evil spell up-on<\/span> me *<\/span>
\n and are set against me in<\/span> fu-ry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Chant<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

5 My heart quakes with-in<\/span> me, *<\/span>
\n and the terrors of death have fallen up<\/span>-on me.<\/span><\/p>\n

6 Fear and trembling have come o<\/span>–ver me<\/span>, *<\/span>
\n and horror over<\/span>-whelms me.<\/span><\/p>\n

7 And I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove<\/span>! *<\/span>
\n I would fly away and be at<\/span> rest.<\/span><\/p>\n

8 I would flee to a far-off\u00a0place<\/span> *<\/span>
\n and make my lodging in the<\/span> wil-derness.<\/span><\/p>\n

9 I would hasten to es-cape<\/span> *<\/span>
\n from the stormy wind and<\/span> temp-est.”<\/span><\/p>\n

10 Swallow them up, O Lord; confound their speech<\/span>; *<\/span>
\n for I have seen violence and strife in the<\/span> cit-y.<\/span><\/p>\n

11 Day and night the watchmen make their rounds upon her walls<\/span>, *<\/span>
\n but trouble and misery are in the<\/span> midst of he<\/span>r.<\/span><\/p>\n

12 There is corruption at her heart<\/span>; *<\/span>
\n her streets are never free of oppression and de<\/span>-ceit.<\/span><\/p>\n

13 For had it been an adversary who taunted me,\u00a0then I could have borne<\/span> it; *<\/span>
\n or had it been an enemy who vaunted herself against me,\u00a0then I could have<\/span> hidden from her<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

14 But it was you, a woman after my own heart<\/span>, *<\/span>
\n my companion, my own fami-liar<\/span> friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

15 We took sweet counsel to-ge<\/span>-ther, *<\/span>
\n and walked with the throng in the house of<\/span> God.<\/span><\/p>\n

16 Let death come upon them suddenly;\u00a0let them go down alive to the grave<\/span>; *<\/span>
\n for wickedness is in their dwellings, in their ve-ry<\/span> midst.<\/span><\/p>\n

17 But I will call upon God<\/span>, *<\/span>
\n and the LORD will de<\/span>-liv-er me<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

18 In the evening, in the morning, and at noonday,\u00a0I will complain and la-ment<\/span>, *<\/span>
\n and she will hear my<\/span> voice.<\/span><\/p>\n

19 She will bring me safely back from the battle waged a-gainst<\/span> me; *<\/span>
\n for there are many who<\/span> fight me.<\/span><\/p>\n

20 God, who is enthroned of old,\u00a0will hear me and bring them down<\/span>; *<\/span>
\n they never change; they do not fear<\/span> God.<\/span><\/p>\n

21 My companion stretched forth her hand against her\u00a0com<\/span>-rade; *<\/span>
\n she has broken her<\/span>\u00a0cov-enant.<\/span><\/p>\n

22 Her speech is softer than but<\/span>-ter, *<\/span>
\n but war is in her<\/span>\u00a0heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

23 Her words are smoother than oil<\/span>, *<\/span>
\n but they are drawn<\/u><\/span> swords.<\/span><\/p>\n

24 Cast your burden upon the LORD,\u00a0and she will sus-tain<\/span> you; *<\/span>
\n she will never let the right-eous<\/span> stum-ble.<\/span><\/p>\n

25 For you will bring the bloodthirsty and de-ceit<\/span>-ful *<\/span>
\n down to the pit of destruction, O<\/span> God.<\/span><\/p>\n

26 They shall not live out half their days<\/span>, *<\/span>
\n but I will put my trust in<\/span> you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spir<\/span>-it: *<\/span>
